FAMOUS COLLAPSES: ’07 NY METS
The 2007 New York Mets
crashed and burned, and when they did, the fan base was on the start of a long
series of disappointing endings from season to season, up until this year. The
crash was heard all the way over to the West Coast.
It seemed that Carlos
Beltran who was left standing at the plate with the bat on his shoulder to end
the 2006 NL Playoff round was the lynchpin that started this migration from
winners to losers in an instant.
In ’07 the Mets led the
league by seven games on Sept. 12. Pedro Martinez had returned back on the
mound after missing the first five months of the season rehabbing a torn
rotator cuff. Things could not look any better for them, as they sought to
repeat their 2006 quest for the Eastern division crown,
New York was a big
favorite in the weak National League field. It looked like no one could
overtake them. Then the unthinkable happened as the Mets lost five in a row,
then won four of five, then lost six of their final seven to finish the season
one game behind the surging Philadelphia Phillies, who swept a three-game
series at Shea Stadium in mid-September. This is what is known as a total
collapse!
GLAVINE |
An aging pitching
staff and a terrible bullpen caught up with the Mets. Tom Glavine, who won his
300th game earlier in the season, and a big fan favorite lost on the final day,
giving up seven earned runs in one-third of an inning of a 9-1 loss to the
Florida Marlins. This would forever put Glavine in the eyes of the Mets fans as
a guy who didn’t care, wanting to return to Atlanta from where he came from.
Although not
necessarily are great team, maybe slightly better than mediocre, they finished
the season with a 88-74 record, and their home/road record was 41-40 home and 47-34
on the road. In fact the months of June and July they had losing records 25-29
and August was barely a winning month with a 15-13 record and September only
14-14.
The Phillies on the
other hand owned the Mets that season winning 12 of 18 games to win the
Division by 1 game.
