NE/NY – Offense/defense
Both the New York Giants and New England Patriots know that the Giants defense has to pressure Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to have a chance to win the Super Bowl. The Giants did it in the 2008 Super Bowl and then again in a 24-20 regular-season victory this season.
The Giants have said they want to "kill the snake," referring to Tom Brady. But the Giants front four will have to win its individual matchups with the New England offensive line to do that.
Jason Pierre-Paul, Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Chris Canty and the rest of the Giants' vaunted defensive line are well known to the Patriots. So let’s take a peek at the Patriots offensive line trying to block them.
In his first press conference after the Patriots landed in Indianapolis on Sunday, Brady addressed the pass rush of the Giants, saying "it seems whoever they put in there can get after the passer," and adding that "I put a lot of trust in my offensive line."
Let's look at the players who line up in front of Brady.
Matt Light (Left Tackle) -- An 11-year veteran named Pro Bowler three times and All-Pro in 2007. Light will have to battle Umenyiora, Dave Tollefson and Pierre-Paul. Light is one of the best tackles in the NFL.
Logan Mankins (Left Guard) -- Seven-year pro, Mankins has been named to the Pro Bowl four times, including each of the past three seasons. Has fallen off quite a bit form last season.
Brian Waters (Right Guard) -- A Free Agent from Kansas City, a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro. A Pro Bowler . e is rated very high in the NFL.
The Giants should be able to keep the pressure on Brady. The Patriot defense is ranked 31st. It is the sheer will of Tom Brady that carries this team, and the work of Wes Welker, Ron Gronkowski and Bill Belichick.
On Belichick, he is not the same coach that last won a Super Bowl, his coaching staff is different, and the team is NOT as dominating as it once was.
